Audio description offers theatre-goers with visual impairments improved access to Lyric performances. Using a lightweight headset (available from the Lyric Theatre Kiosk), customers tune into a commentary, which describes the on-stage action, character gestures, expressions, and the costume and scenery, alongside the dialogue. The description is carefully timed to complement the performance, leaving dialogue uninterrupted.
The equipment also allows customers to amplify onstage sound to their preferred level. We ask customers to book with us in advance, notifying us of their needs.
Captioning offers improved access to Lyric performances for theatre-goers with hearing impairments. In captioned performances, the play script appears on screening units placed on either side of the stage. We ask customers to book with us in advance, notifying us of their needs.
The Induction Loop System
The induction loop system is designed to improve the experience of theatre-goers who use a hearing aid with a “T”facility. We have infra-red audio enhancement in both auditoria. The system transmits an audio signal directly into the hearing aid, greatly reducing background noise, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that affect clarity of sound.
Loop necklaces (available from the Lyric Kiosk) are for use inside the auditoria. Hearing aid users should note that the loop coverage is weaker at the ends of Rows A and B in the Main Stage, and the ends of the balcony in the Naughton Studio. We ask customers to book with us in advance, notifying us of their needs.
We are happy to organise touch tours for people with visual, hearing or physical impairments. Access to the stage and set before a performance is a way of firming up the descriptive information and provides extra detail to aide engagement with the production. Patrons will explore the space, and may like to handle selected props, costumes and furniture. Touch tours usually last approximately 30 minutes. We ask customers to book with us in advance, notifying us of their needs.
Relaxed performances are specially designed performances that have been adapted to reduce anxiety and create a supportive atmosphere for people with autism spectrum conditions, learning disabilities and other sensory and communication disorders. Lights in the auditoria are brighter and sound levels are lowered. Not all performances lend themselves to a relaxed performance so please contact Box Office for more info when booking.
