Grace Smart receives Drama Desk Nomination for 'Good Vibrations'
Nominations for the 68th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced 29th April by stage and screen star Kathleen Turner. Following its run at the Irish Arts Center in 2023, Grace Smart has been nominated for Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical for 'Good Vibrations'.
In keeping with the Drama Desk’s mission, the nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway during the 2023-2024 New York theatre season, that the Drama Desk determined ended as of April 25, 2024. Productions must have ran for 21 or more live performances to be considered eligible.
The list of nominated performances included highly acclaimed actors Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Rachel McAdams and Bebe Neuwirth, alongside Broadway veterans Shoshana Bean, Kelli O'Hara and Brian d'Arcy James.
For Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical, Grace Smart has been nominated for her design of the Lyric's Production of Good Vibrations, which ran at the Irish Arts Center June to July 2023. Grace's work with the Lyric goes back to 2015, including when she was the Winner of the prestigious Linbury Prize for her design of the Lyric's production of St. Joan (2016).
Previous winners within the category include: Derek Lane for Moulin Rouge! (2020), David Korins for Beetlejuice (2019) and Richard Hudson for The Lion King (1998).
The Drama Desk Awards are the only major New York City theatre awards for which productions on Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway compete against each other in the same categories. What sets the Drama Desk Awards apart is that they are voted on and bestowed by theatre critics, journalists, editors, and publishers covering theatre. The Drama Desk Awards honour all aspects of New York’s professional theatre.
This year’s awards will be held on Monday, June 10 at The Skirball Center for the Performing Arts - Best wishes to Grace from everyone at the Lyric!
