Shoppers in Belfast were sure to do a double-take last Wednesday when a 1968 Civil Rights march, complete with authentic civil rights banner, took place in Belfast’s Cornmarket.
It was all part of a landmark play to mark the 50th
’ anniversary of the first civil rights march in Northern Ireland. WE’LL WALK HAND IN HAND
by leading playwright, Martin Lynch is to be performed at The Lyric Theatre from 22 - 31 March.
But this was a civil rights march with a twist as the play explores, not only civil rights in 1968 but civil rights in 2018, so some of the marchers were be actual African refugees and members of the LGBT community who will also be taking to the stage alongside the professional acting cast.
Lynch himself led the 20-strong cast of actors - led by one half of the Grimes and McKee comedy duo, Conor Grimes and leading Belfast actress, Maria Connolly (Two Sore Legs
) - to walk behind the civil rights banner to whip up interest in the highly anticipated production.
