Four budding young artists have won family tickets for Hansel + Grettel after their pictures came top of the class in the Lyric's School Drawing Competition.
School-children from across Northern Ireland entered the competition to draw a picture inspired by the magical fairy-tale,Hansel + Grettel, which is the children’s show this Christmas at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.
The overall winner was Year 8 pupil Lara Pinkerton, from Wallace High School, Lisburn, whose colourful picture will be reproduced in the show’s poster programme.
“I’m really excited,” she said. “I didn’t think I would win the competition. It was a great surprise!”
Fellow pupil, Georgia Black, was a runner-up with her stunning gingerbread cottage which is a favourite part of the fairy-tale. Visitors to the theatre will be able to buy their sweets from a real gingerbread cottage in the foyer.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic to win tickets for the show,” Georgia said. “I have never won anything like this before. It was really unexpected. I’m really looking forward to seeing Hansel + Grettel.”
The other two runners-up are Eve Johnston, from Straid Primary School, near Ballyclare and Madeline Borghmans, from Cranmore Integrated Primary School, in Finaghy, Belfast.
Eve’s teacher, Florence Mairs, described her as a “very, very talented artist”.
“This is just one of several art competitions that Evie, as she’s known, has been successful in over the past year,” she said. “She has left primary school and gone to Ballyclare High School where I’m sure she will continue her artwork. She is absolutely absorbed by her art. I think we will hear a lot more about her in the future. The children really enjoyed the Lyric’s competition – it really captured their imagination.”
All the competition entries will be displayed on a screen in the Lyric Café Bar during the show's run from 2 December to 13 January.
The magical, musical adventure, Hansel + Grettel has been written and directed by the award-winning Paul Boyd who last staged the show at the Lyric in 1999.
This time, he has engaged some fantastic special effects and eye-popping digital projections to bring this popular fairy-tale to life.
“It’s wonderful to be working on a spell-binding production of Hansel & Grettel that uses all of the magic that the new building has to offer, and to be staging this classic story for a younger generation brought up on the tales of the witches and wizards in the Harry Potter books,” said Paul. “It really is a magical, musical adventure for all ages."
Hansel + Grettel tells the story of two clever children, two desperate parents, and an ill-advised trip into the woods where the children meet a bird, a frog and a witch with a most unusual taste in home décor.
The show features the songs “A World Without Children” and “The Wish Song” as well as Hansel + Grettel’s ballad “Lost and Alone”, Fats the Frog’s “The Greens”, and the Witch’s hysterical show-stopper “Children’s Portions” – all rounded off with an exciting mega-mix finale!
The show is really brought to life by a sterling cast of Ciara Louise Baxter, Patrick Corey, Christopher Finn, Jane Milligan, Christina Nelson and Tommy Wallace.
Hansel + Grettel runs on the Danske Bank Stage from 2 December 2012 to 13 January 2013. Tickets are £17.50 for adults and £12 for children or buy a Family Ticket for less than £13 per person! £51.50 (1 adult and 3 children or 2 adults and 2 children).
