As the Olympic torch arrives in Northern Ireland it's a reminder that the Games and the summer holidays are just around the corner. Are you looking for a creative outlet for your child or simply stuck for ideas to occupy them through the long summer months?
The Lyric Theatre has a wide-ranging drama programme for children and young people from age 7-19 this summer. The programme’s theme is the Olympic Games inspired by this year’s biggest drama being staged inLondonin July.
The Lyric’s Creative Learning Department is offering four workshops for different age groups, each lasting a week, led by a team of highly experienced facilitators and featuring a variety of fun, drama-related activities. These include acting, movement and voice, and for younger children sessions on making props and costumes.
There will be an opportunity for parents and friends to view some of the work-in-progress during the final session at 11am on Saturday mornings. Participants should be available for all six days, Monday to Saturday, and must be of the appropriate age for the course. See list at end of release for full details. The Lyric Summer School is generously supported by Belfast Harbour.
Older teenagers, aged 17-19, are also being offered an exciting opportunity to work with the Lyric’s professional creative and technical teams to perform a play at the end of a three-week programme (23 July – 11 August).
In keeping with the Olympics theme, aspiring young actors will get the chance to stage the classic Greek tragedy,Oedipus The King, written by Sophocles but given a modern interpretation.
There are just 20 places for this three-week programme and those interested will be asked to audition. The cost is £200 but the Lyric is offering two bursaries for two outstanding young actors who may need financial assistance.
The course comes recommended by well-known Belfastactor and writer, Dan Gordon:
“I quite often get asked for advice from aspiring young actors or from the parents of aspiring young actors,” said Dan. “My advice when anyone asks is to get as much experience as you can and start as early as you can.
“Not everyone can afford to pay even the reduced fees some of the drama courses offer. So here’s a tip-off. The Lyric Theatre is doing a summer production of a classic Greek play – Oedipus The King.
“They are offering two bursaries to pay for exceptional young actors who can’t afford the cost. That’s two completely free places – yes free – and eighteen places at half the price of a fancy phone.”
The course runs from 23 July - 11 August and all those with places must be available for the full three weeks.
