'The Daughters of Róisín'; Lyric's 2024 Edinburgh National Partnership with the Pleasance Theatre Trust
'The Daughters of Róisín' has been selected as the Lyric and Pleasance Theatre Trust's new writing for the 2024 Edinburgh National Partnership. The partnership supports artists from across the UK to bring work to the Edinburgh Fringe.
For 2024 the Lyric Theatre Belfast is delighted to be one of the partner organisations alongside Bristol Old Vic, Leicester Curve, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Sherman Theatre.
The Pleasance Theatre Trust works with partner theatres across the UK to identify and support exceptional artists and companies local to them who want to take work to the Fringe. Each partner is a leading national producing house, with a commitment to supporting and developing new artists. This programme recognises the extraordinary work being created across the country, and hopes to provide tangible support to these companies to present at the Fringe. Together, the partnerships hope to make a substantial contribution to develop the next generation of leading theatre-makers and companies.
Shows selected by the partnerships are awarded:
- Financing costs towards the presenting of their show at the Fringe
- A package of PR & Marketing
- Guaranteed inclusion in the Pleasance Festival Fringe Programme
- Edinburgh Fringe registration
- Rehearsal and development space in the partner theatre
- A programming option in The Pleasance London transfer run post-Fringe
- Mentorship, support and advice
- Support to develop and deliver accessible performances as part of the run
This is the Lyric's second year in partnering with the Pleasance Theatre Trust to support local shows performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2023, 2 projects were supported by the partnership; The Half Moon by Alice Malseed and Scaredy Fat by Colm McCready. Working with The Pleasance allows us to identify dynamic artists at different stages in their careers, with the primary aim of the scheme to uncover and support the best companies and artists from Northern Ireland, and across the UK, to present work at the Fringe!
The 2024 production selected for the partnership is The Daughters of Róisín by Aoibh Johnston; a hard-hitting play that explores the harrowing history of church and state-sanctioned abuse against pregnant women out of wedlock in Ireland over the last 100 years.
The Daughters of Róisín has already toured widely across Ireland and the UK, with sell out shows in London, Belfast and Dublin, while also making its Australian debut at the Adelaide Fringe in 2019. The production will play a limited engagement in the Lyric Naughton Studio (23rd-26th July) before it's run in Edinburgh at the Pleasance Theatre (31st July - 25th August) - Book your tickets now!
