We are thrilled to announce our new Spring/Summer programme - TRANSFORMATION. A series of plays and musicals exploring change and choice.
"One of our most memorable nights in 2018 was the celebration to mark our 50th anniversary, a beautifully generous evening where fifty artists - from Lyric stalwarts to young graduates - engaged in a night devoted to the new plays first staged at the Lyric over the preceding decades. It was an extraordinary social history of our city highlighting the brilliance, wit and compassion of our playwrights and the engagement this theatre has with its audience. Thank you for your patronage.
Our programme for 2019 is called “Transformation”, a title chosen to address issues of change and choice. In the looming shadow of Brexit, the Lyric needs to be at the forefront in exploring the cultural impact of this sense of the unknown and change. The season opens with NI Opera and Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, followed by a re-staging of our huge hit, a co-production with Bruiser Theatre, The 39 Steps. Our first Artist in Residence, David Ireland returns with the acclaimed Ulster American and we follow this with a major revival of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Emma Jordan. Our first major new play of the year All Mod Cons by Erica Murray was a big hit in our New Playwrights Programme, and I am delighted to welcome Erica as this year’s Artist-in-Residence.
Also jam-packed into our “Transformation” season is Milo’s Hat Trick for the Belfast Children’s festival; A Day in May; Bat the Father by Donal O’Kelly, Ruby! and Ian McKellen on stage for his 80th birthday... and that’s not even half of the amazing theatre on offer. We are delighted to announce next Christmas we will move from Wonderland to Neverland with Peter Pan written and directed by Paul Boyd."
