Requests at the Lyric are wide-ranging from publicity to props but never dull. This week our props team are appealing for a real Olympic Torch to use in Molly Wobbly.
The new comedy musical, whose full title is Molly Wobbly’s Tit Factory, takes a satirical swipe at society’s obsession with cosmetic surgery.
Writer and director, Paul Boyd, from Belfast, decided using a real Olympic Torch would add a topical comic touch to a scene as the show will be staged during the course of the London Olympic Games.
The hilarious musical is previewing at the Lyric Theatre from 20 – 29 July and then goes to the Edinburgh Fringe from 3 – 26 August. It is one of just two shows from Northern Ireland to be playing at the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe.
Rehearsals begin this Friday with the cast that includes Olivier-award winning actress, Leanne Jones, (Hairspray)and Tara Flynn (Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle), together with Christopher Finn, Orla Gormley, Kevin Hynes, Conleth Kane, Russell Morton, and Tommy Wallace.
Nick Trueman, Company Stage Manager, made the appeal for an Olympic Torch.
“As a producing theatre, we always rely on the generosity of those in the community to assist us, and we would really appreciate it if someone could lend us their Olympic Torch for our new comedy musical,” he said. “It would have a shining part to play on stage at both the Lyric and inEdinburghand we would, of course, ensure its safe return at the end of the summer.”
A must see for fans of The Rocky Horror Show, Avenue Q and Jerry Springer: the Opera, the riotous Molly Wobbly’s Tit Factory is rapidly gaining cult classic status. With a style that is very much influenced by gothic horror and graphic novels, this is the adult musical comedy Sweeney Todd wishes he was in!
Life in Little Happening runs like clockwork until the arrival of a mysterious stranger whose very presence seems to poison the community. When a neon sign suddenly appears above the door of the old church reading ‘Molly Wobbly’s Tit Factory’, it becomes clear that life on Mammary Lanewill never be the same again.
