Working alongside the Department of Justice Northern Ireland and Hydebank Wood College, Blackout is a progressive project aimed at reducing crime and antisocial behaviour.
Focused on developing awareness in young people of the possible consequences of taking drugs and alcohol, the project employs emerging actors and artists touring across Northern Ireland and visiting over 40 schools. We deliver performances and workshops to schools and community groups that encourage young people to think about the life decisions they make, the potential consequences and outcomes and how to seek help and support should they need it.
Blackout is a story about James, a young man from a dysfunctional family, where circumstances lead him to a pathway of drugs and alcohol. The death of his grandfather prompts a series of incidents that result in charges, court and a possible custodial sentence. This high-energy production is followed by a question and answer session with a panel of three young people from Hydebank Wood College who have first-hand experience of being in custody and the judicial system. The overarching message demonstrates how young people can be mindful about the implications of a wrong decision and encourages them to ask for help before events spin out of control. An accompanying social media campaign and Instagram channel promote the benefits of talking about personal challenges and directs young people to appropriate organisations for advice and support.
