The Lyric Theatre is excited to be partnering with Mumbai Theatre Company, Rage Productions with support from the British Council. This partnership which will bring Indian and Irish theatre artists together will explore themes of colonialism, communication, and language. The hope had been pre-covid to have the workshops in Mumbai and Belfast in person but due to the ongoing pandemic these exciting workshops will now be carried out online.
The objective is to create a truly international theatrical collaboration that is both luminous and potent in its epic qualities, and searing in its poignancy.
India and Northern Ireland have striking similarities in our history and the way our respective societies are structured; both have experienced partition, leading to the creation of two states separated along sectarian lines. We wish to explore not only the role of theatre in our post-partition, post-conflict societies, but how we can practically work together to create theatre that is urgent, relevant, and artistically rewarding. Furthermore, we hope to investigate how we can enrich our collective practise and knowledge, by sharing expertise, talent, and insights.
This is an exciting collaboration that has the potential for long-term partnership. Northern Ireland has a small yet significant Indian population, but diversity is not currently represented on our stages. We wish to nurture any artistic ambition that young people from minority communities have and to help them create opportunities to express these artistic ambitions. In the long term, this partnership aims to create new platforms for us to discover and create new work and offer innovative, exciting opportunities for talented artists to meet (virtually for now) and work together.

The arts are more vital than ever to reflect, explore and discover when faced with such uncertainty. We would have loved to bring artists to Mumbai and the Rage Productions ensemble to Belfast but are thrilled that technology will allow us to continue until it is safe to meet once again in person.
